Don't Cha-Quit

Growing up, below is my favorite inspirational poem. Three decades after, it still gives me the same kick when I need some perking up. I don't know who actually wrote it - but whoever you are, thank you very much! You don't just know how many lives you saved.

Road to a Credit Card Debt Free Life

I got pregnant, got married, got pregnant again, in that particular order.
And then one day, I woke up from my deep slumber and realized that hey  I can't let life run it for me, while I just watch on the bleacher. I have to take control of my life. I cannot just make babies. I had to give them a better life, a better future, probably better than my own.
But of course, you and I know that it's not as easy as that. But sure boy, it helps and it's the start!
Winning every battle begins in the mind.  But after conceptualizing it in your mind, you actually have to move your "arse" and work for it. As for me, it always involves, pulling my hair up.  Every time I see myself of catch myself, pulling my hair up in a bun, messy or otherwise, It means serious business with a capital letter S.

Birthday Nugget for my Son

Dear Prince,

My eldest child, you are now 14 years old (September 11), I am happy to see you grow into your own man.  I am happy to hear your thoughts and conviction.

First, let me throw it out there.  This is not a "Safehaven" movie kind of thing, where the mother, who died early due to cancer writes a letter for her 2 kids for special occasion.  I will not die anytime soon, I still have a long way to go. It's just that, sometimes, teens are getting annoyed through formal "one-on-one coaching/mentoring technique", thus I am innovating - "parenting through blogging". Yes, I just made that up just now, but it sounds good, so I might go with it as theme of this blog.

Growing up, I have my own qualms and issues. I have so many questions to ask the world.  And it was not until I had you that some were answered; that I found myself.  Through prayer and books, and through my mentor Dr. Rita Gatuslao, I was able to find myself.

Just as she shared with me her book entitled The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz - I am doing it with you and Psalm, eventually.

Part 3 of 3 - Credit Card Debtor's Perspective on R.A. 8484

Let us do a “throwback” a bit. Before that collection letter with the provision of RA 8484, (because I think that’s the final straw), you had at some point had a brush with what “Rebecca  Bloomwood” in Shopaholic experienced: collection agent!

Don’t worry, this part will teach you your rights when that awful phone rings. But of course, we are not discounting the fact that those banks deserved to be paid. It’s just that, just as they have their rights, so do you.  The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) issued a set of rules and regulations governing the credit card operations of banks and affiliate credit card companies. The following (but not limited to) are considered unfair collection practices:

Part 2 - Credit Card Debtor's Perspective on R.A. 8484

RA 8484, in relation to non-payment of credit card debt

What is R.A. 8484?

Under the law, an access device means any card, plate, code, account number, electronic serial number, personal identification number and other telecommunication services, equipment or instrumentalities-identifier or other means of account access that can be used to obtain money, goods, services or any other thing of value or to initiate a transfer of funds other than a transfer originated solely by paper instrument.

Will You Be Imprisoned if you Violate RA 8484?

Part 1 - Credit Card Debtor's Perspective on R.A. 8484

Debt.  The word comes from the French dette and ultimately Latin debere (to owe), from de habere (to have). The letter b in the word debt was reintroduced in the 17th century, possibly by Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary of 1755— several other words that had existed without a b had them reinserted at around that time.  Debt is that which is owed; usually referencing assets owed, but the term can also cover moral obligations and other interactions not requiring money. In the case of assets, debt is a means of using future purchasing power in the present before a summation has been earned. Some companies and corporations use debt as a part of their overall corporate finance strategy. A debt is created when a creditor agrees to lend a sum of assets to a debtor. In modern society, debt is usually granted with expected repayment; in most cases, plus interest. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt)

Credit Card is a small card that authorizes the person named on it to charge goods or services to his or her account. It differs from a debit card, with which money is automatically deducted from the bank account of the cardholder to pay for the goods or services. Credit-card use originated in the U.S. in the 1920s; early credit cards were issued by various firms (e.g., oil companies and hotel chains) for use at their outlets only. The first universal credit card, accepted by a variety of establishments, was issued by Diners' Club in 1950. Charge cards such as American Express require cardholders to pay for all purchases at the end of the billing period (usually monthly). Bank cards such as MasterCard and Visa allow customers to pay only a portion of their bill; interest accrues on the unpaid balance. Credit-card companies get revenue from annual fees and interest paid by cardholders and from fees paid by participating merchants.(http://www.answers.com/topic/charge-card)

With the advent of credit cards, most often than not, instead of being relieved from our financial burdens, this plastic had been the source of many financial woes due to the ready credit it provides. The clothes, the shoes, the gadget you love are just a swipe away, even if you have no cash. For some, they are constrained in using the credit card for legitimate needs like grocery and milk for kids. For some, the earning is simply not enough because of early marriage, or only one spouse is working, or in instances where although both spouses are working, the salary, however, is very low. There are numerous reasons, why people convince themselves that they need to have a credit card.  Then come payment time, at first, you get to keep up with the payment. Eventually, it is preceded by the vicious cycle of accumulation of debts until you find yourself barely making the minimum and before you knew it, it has gotten out hand and collection letters have arrived.  You would want to pay, but you do not know where to get the fund.

Life after Death

Today is my father's death anniversary.  My father died when I was 12 years old.  Today, it has been 24 years that I didn't have a father. Come to think of it, I lived twice as long without a father, than I had.

I was a daddy's girl.  I'm the eldest. Next to me are two boys, Neal and Jared.  For so long, I only had 3 siblings. Then, when I was in 5th grade (1990), my mom got pregnant - with Shane, my little sister. Then, my father died.  Shane was only over 1 year old. And my mom is pregnant with our youngest, Ace, when papa died.

Growing up, loosing my dad was my greatest fear.  I would wake up in the middle of the night and listen to him if he is still breathing.  But September 2, 1992 changed my life forever.

Thank God I'm In Good Health!

I intend to write a blog about my journey as a cancer survivor. I searched my file, if I had written an essay about it. I'm glad I did, because this reminded me of the need to eat healthy again - I've wrote this in 2014. Fast forward to 2016 - I backslide from healthy eating again... This should stop now.
